NYRR Queens 10K 2016

Queens10kNew York Road Runners has two big races every year – the NYC Half Marathon and the NYC Marathon – and the easiest way to enter each is to run a number of qualifying races the prior year to enter each. The NYRR Queens 10K, which has replaced the Queens Half Marathon in recent years, is one of the NYRR’s five borough series and a qualifier for both.

On June 18, we headed out to Queens, NY on a hot morning to run the relatively flat course near Citi Field. We started on Meridian Road for about a half mile before turning left and heading south around Meadow Lake. As we reached the northwest point of the lake and crossed over a bridge, we reached the 5k point and continued north past the Queens Museum. At the four mile mark, we started our out and back on Shea Road and ran in sight of Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, as be ran back and forth. We came back and by the USTA Tennis Center and the famous Unisphere before running the last half mile and a quick left to the finish line of the Queens 10k.

While the day was hot, the Queens 10k is always a good run and qualifier for the NYC half and full marathons. Even with the heat, I was able to finish the race in 1:06:26, a respectable time, and one I can look forward to trying to beat in future races.
