Running

NYRR Queens 10k 2018

As races are run in New York during the year, they are often done with an eye towards the following year’s races. By running with New York Road Runners during the year, it is possible to gain entries for the New York City Marathon and New York City Half Marathon, and running the five borough series works towards entries for both.

With the idea that I wanted to run the New York City Half Marathon next year, and having already completed the Brooklyn Half Marathon, the next race in my sights was the NYRR Queens 10k.

It was a warm Saturday morning in June, and the beautiful weather was the perfect way to get prepared in the park for the race to begin. We started on Meridian Road for about a half mile before turning left and heading south around Meadow Lake. As we reached the northwest point of the lake and crossed over a bridge, we reached the 5k point and continued north past the Queens Museum. At the four mile mark, we started our out and back on Shea Road and ran in sight of Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, as be ran back and forth. We came back and by the USTA Tennis Center and the famous Unisphere before running the last half mile and a quick left to the finish line of the Queens 10k.

With the NYRR Queens 10k completed, I was one step closer to running the 2019 NYC Half Marathon. I was able to complete my six mile tour of Queens in 1:05:56, and it left me feeling good as it kicked off my months long training for the 2018 NYC Marathon.
